PLOT (Wikipedia): Fifteen years ago, wealthy but crippled Colorado cattleman Arch Strobie (Ray Collins), whose own son Lee (Robert Walker) was wild, took in young Owen Daybright (Burt Lancaster) as a foster son to help raise and control Lee. Now Owen is ranch foreman, but Lee, despite being married to Jen (Joanne Dru), is wilder than ever.

Unmarried Lily Fasken (Sally Forrest) gives birth but refuses to identify the father. After Owen gives Lily $500 to help care for the baby, her brothers Hub (John Ireland) and Dick (Hugh O'Brian) believe that he is the guilty party, but they are unaware that Owen has done this on Lee's behalf. The brothers try to beat up Owen and he lodges a complaint against them. Sentenced to a week in jail, they vow to get even as soon as they're out.

When Arch chides Lee for overdrawing his bank account by withdrawing $500 in gold, Jen realizes that Lee fathered Lily's baby. She confronts him and Lee tries to lie his way out. She decides to leave him but is persuaded by Owen and Arch to stay. Lee inveigles Arch to make him a partner in the ranch by saying that he will strike out on his own unless he gets a half-interest; he gets what he wants and learns that the other half will go to Owen, once Arch retires or dies.

Jen locks Lee out of their bedroom. He gets drunk, mistakenly believing she and Owen are carrying on behind his back. He schemes to get rid of Owen and make a fortune at the same time by conspiring with Hub and Dick to ambush Owen during the spring cattle roundup. On the trail, Lee secretly sells 3,000 head of the cattle, intending to run off with it, but Owen learns of the plan.

Lee pretends to change his mind. He persuades Owen to ride in with him to stop the sale, but in fact he lures Owen into a trap. Hub and Dick, waiting in ambush, wound Owen as Lee casually rides away. In the ensuing gunfight, Owen Kills Dick. Hearing shots, a group of trailhands ride to Owen's rescue. They chase down and shoot Hub. Owen catches up with Lee and tells him that they are both going to confess everything to Arch. Lee refuses and draws his gun, forcing Owen to kill him. Owen breaks the news to Arch and Jen.

Michael Grauer debunks common tropes in Western films, such as the realism of quick-draw duels, gunslingers, and the effects of the Gold Rush era in "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly," starring Clint Eastwood; the commonality of saloon fights and bank robberies in "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs," with Tim Blake Nelson, James Franco, and Liam Neeson; and the frontier town shootout in "The Magnificent Seven" (2016), with Denzel Washington, Ethan Hawke, and Chris Pratt. He discusses the common misconception of the American Frontier as lawless, such as the role of bounty hunters and sheriffs in "Django Unchained," with Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Christoph Waltz; federal lawmen stopping an outlaw gang in "True Grit" (2010), with Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, and Hailee Steinfeld; and the connection between outlaws and former Confederate soldiers after the Civil War in "Westworld" S1E5 (2016). Grauer is a public historian focusing on cowboy history and Western American culture. He is the McCasland Chair of Cowboy Culture and Curator of Cowboy Collections and Western Art for the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. With 40 years of experience as a museum curator, he has curated over 150 exhibitions on Western art, culture, and history and authored around 65 publications. He also does a living history cowboy presentation called "Cowboy Mike."

Cowboy Historian Rates 13 Wild West Scenes In Movies And TV | How Real Is It? | Insider

MARSHAL OF RENO & SANTA FE UPRISING Rare showing of back-to-back Red Ryder westerns. Wild Bill Elliott and Alan “Rocky” Lane are the stars, each in their own action-packed western movie. Both are loaded with fast riding and fisticuffs and both feature Bobby Blake as Red’s sidekick, Little Beaver.

Wild Bill leads off with MARSHAL OF RENO (1944). This is the movie that Gabby Hayes displays some of that fancy gun twirling that he’d been practicing as a sidekick to a young John Wayne, William Boyd and Roy Rogers. MARSHAL OF RENO co-stars Jay Kirby and future cinema legend, writer/director Blake Edwards (THE PINK PANTHER) as two Eastern dudes falsely accused of robbery and murder. Red Ryder goes undercover to find out who the gang leader is.

Not only is Republic known for fast action, but for having top character actors in the cast. MARSHAL OF RENO is no exception. You’ll spot Charlie King, Fred Graham, LeRoy Mason, Keene Duncan, Edmund Cobb and Tom London as the Sheriff. Tom Steele doubles Elliott. Alice Fleming is featured as The Duchess in the film which was shot at the Iverson Ranch in Chatsworth.

The 2nd feature, 1946’s SANTA FE UPRISING, stars Alan “Rocky” Lane as Red, replacing Elliott who was promoted to A movies. It is one of the best in the series and features former Warner Brothers star Barton MacLane, with Jack La Rue, Dick Curtis, Tom London (again) and as deputies, Emmett Lynn and Hank Patterson, who you’ll recognize from GREEN ACRES.

You won’t recognize the Duchess in this film because she won’t be played by Alice Fleming but Martha Wentworth. Of course, Bobby Blake IS back as Red’s helpful sidekick who ends up needing to be rescued. The typical slam-bang action you expect in a Republic production is even more inventive than usual because the 2nd Unit Director is none other than the legendary stuntman and former western star, Yakima Canutt.

Yep, the red-haired hero of Republic Pictures is back with a double-barreled double feature on Word’s Wayback. So…Double your pleasure with our Double Bill and let us know which Red Ryder you prefer. Wild Bill Elliott with his backwards guns or Alan Lane with the traditional double rig.

Tom's parents are killed by Mexican outlaws after their leader (Van Cleef) rapes his mother as he watched. He sets out to exact revenge and is ultimately helped by a successful gold prospector who has been robbed by the same outlaws.

"I have to grit my teeth (grit-grit) when I read the putdown of this movie. Sure, it is another vengeance adventure and, sure, there are goings-on that have gone on before, but the sum total is - it is some picture, and I mean that in a positive way.

The opening scene with the Easter bunny - well, I saw this on Maundy Thursday - was too realistic, as was the rape of the mother, viewed by the audience at a distance, but by her son as a close-up. He also witnessed the killing of his father, a combination that demanded, yes, demanded, retribution.

Said youngster was ex-heartthrob Leif Garrett who was excellent in a role that put him on screen most of the time. Lee Van Cleef was on the screen for a short period of time and was his usual brooding s.o.b. self. He was an expert.

His gang of heartless bad guys, and there was a gang of them, were, as they were supposed to be, totally obnoxious.

The other star, of course, was ex-footballer, Jim Brown (no stranger to westerns) doing a very fine job as the mad, brooding hero of the piece.

"I know nothing of Lief Garrett's modern day goings on, but I'll tell you this: he can sure pick a grim film to star in! Not only was he great in Devil Times Five (aka Peopletoys), he's also good in this, as a kid out to get revenge on the low down scum who killed his parents! The leader of this gang? Lee Van Cleef, all bald and knife-brandishing.

Garrett fairly works his way through the evil gang, using snakes, scorpions, nooses, rocks and arrows in what amounts to almost a slasher-like Western. I didn't even think he needed the help of Jim Brown, but when Big Jim starts throwing dynamite at everyone, you're kind of signing up a winner right there! Big Jim also brings along his band of brothers he's been fighting with, just to complicate things up a bit.

This is your typical dark late-era Spaghetti Western, violent and pretty unrelenting, with a fairly high body count. Made in Isreal so I guess the term 'Spaghetti' might not be appropriate." Written by Bezenby on IMDb.com.
