These car brands are collecting and sharing your data | The Business | ABC News
Privacy and consumer rights advocates are pushing for tougher laws to limit data collection to what is "fair and reasonable" after a report revealed drivers of Australia's most popular car brands are being spied on. The research by Choice found car manufacturers are collecting and sharing data with third party companies and often keep the fine print in their privacy policies vaguely worded to allow them to track drivers. Toyota collects vehicle locations and information about a driver's behaviour, including how much they accelerate, brake or corner. Kia and Hyundai collect voice recognition data and sell it to AI training company Credence. While Tesla goes further, capturing video and images from a camera inside the vehicle. Drivers can opt out of having their data collected through the settings menu in their car or through the vehicle's app, but some experts say that's not enough. The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries says its members collect consumer data in line with the law and the information helps companies improve safety, performance and navigation features. The Insurance Council of Australia says it's not aware of any of its members using driver behaviour data collected from manufacturers to assess risk or set premiums.
