A novelist and screenwriter with hundreds of mystery and crime stories to his credit, internet entrepreneur and author Lee Goldberg finally wrote a western. Called “Calico,” his book is a western with a twist. It’s set in modern times with an ex-LAPD cop sent to work in Barstow, California, for punishment and an attitude adjustment. What she finds is a dead body that catapults her into a time traveling murder mystery in the Old West. Typical of Goldberg’s popular mystery novels, this western contemporary, western set thriller is filled with his usual amounts of suspense and humor.

A western genre enthusiast and historian, Lee also talks with Word about GUNSMOKE’s nearly forgotten creator and writer, John Meston, and the evolution of the classic stories from radio to the long running TV series.

This rollicking episode with Goldberg and Word is followed by the recent GUNSMOKE MASH-UP. It’s an episode of the classic series combining the audio from radio and visuals from the TV series. The episode selected is the pilot for the TV version called “Hack Prine,” which aired on CBS May 12, 1956, but was originally scheduled to air in April.
