Residents of Licata, Sicily, woke up on Sunday morning counting the damage from heavy rainfall that caused severe flooding and landslides on the Mediterranean Island, just south of Italy.

"In the space of a few minutes there was all hell breaking loose," Enza, a local resident, said while commenting on the extreme weather that pummelled her town on Saturday.

As the weather conditions were improving, residents started to tidy up their houses and streets, while the damage count began."This is enormous damage, particularly in the agricultural sector," the mayor of Licata, Angelo Balsamo, said.

The president of Sicily, Renato Schifani, has convened the regional government for Monday to assess the damage due to the extreme weather and allocate the first resources for emergency interventions.
