Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is threatening TV stations with criminal penalties — including jail time — if they air ads in support of an abortion rights ballot initiative.

A successful 'yes' vote from FL residents on Amendment 4 this November would codify abortion rights in the state’s constitution. DeSantis’ admin is using taxpayer dollars to fight against it.

DeSantis has been accused of using ‘voting police’ to intimidate Floridians who signed petitions to put the measure on the ballot. His admin also created a state-run website condemning the amendment and released ads promoting the state’s current six-week abortion ban.

On October 3, his Department of Health sent a letter to at least one local NBC affiliate suggesting prosecutors could bring criminal charges against the station for showing ads that promote the amendment.
