Work has begun on the Royal Navy's newest warship with the first steel cut on HMS Formidable – the latest Type 31 frigate being built for the Senior Service.

Five in total will be constructed at Rosyth Dockyard in Fife and the new ship will take over the role currently being carried out by the Type 23s.

HMS Formidable is the third ship in the class with construction on HMS Venturer – which is in the outfitting stage – and HMS Active already under way at the shipyard.
